The chief of the Environmental Protection Agency told Congress in 2010, "The science behind climate change is settled, and human activity is responsible for global warming." The Mad, Mad, Mad World of Climatism says that by the very nature of science, nothing is ever "settled" and new evidence must be subjected to scrutiny, debate, and peer review. Climate change activists do not allow scrutiny or dissent, so their science is often flawed. "Climatism" is the belief that man-made greenhouse gases are destroying earth's climate. Fear is used as a tactic to encourage climatism. Winter storms, summer heat, drought, hurricanes, tornadoes, and tsunamis are all blamed on man's misuse of the planet. Extreme weather events are used as "policy windows" to push onerous policies not otherwise acceptable to the public. Economics, not fear, should drive energy policy. Capitalism and freedom are not compatible with environmental sustainability, which calls for intellectual elites to "direct the activities of mankind to preserve the planet for future generations." Government subsidies, tax breaks, and penalties have forced some businesses to go along with the sustainability movement, while others have benefited greatly from it. Money and special interest groups have unduly influenced the scientific community and many have bought into climatism, especially at the level of governing boards. When scientists dispute manmade warming, attempts are made to keep them silent. After resigning from the American Physical Society, one esteemed former member said, "the global warming scam [is the] most successful pseudoscientific fraud I have seen in my long life as a physicist." Eventually, the doomsday predictions of the climatists will not come to pass and their lies will be exposed, but at what financial cost and at what cost to our liberty? Over the last ten years, more than $1 trillion has been spent by governments and businesses on dubious renewable energy programs. Goreham says the world is on track to waste another $1 trillion in the next four years. If everyone were aware of the information in this fact-filled book, there would be a worldwide revolt against climatism. (New Lenox Books, 2013, 247 pp., $22.95) |
"Climatists" continue to claim that warming trends exist and that human activity is the cause, although there is evidence to the contrary. Warming trend data were doctored and corrupted by scientists in "Climategate" scandals. Scientific evidence shows that warming trends are naturally occurring as an earth cycle. Climate change is real and continuous; blaming it on man is junk science.
