Diplomatic Divorce:
Why America Should End Its Love Affair with the United Nations

by Thomas P. Kilgannon

Why would any American who doesn’t want his life turned over to malicious, incompetent bureaucrats support the United Nations? Consider the evidence in support of this rhetorical question, presented by a writer who has spent many years many years watching this dysfunctional organization from posts both in and out of government.

The UN is anti-American to the core. The recent speech by Hugo Chavez, in which he called President George W. Bush "the devil," was really business as usual. The proof of this is in the smiles, laughter and applause that Hugo’s punch lines received, particularly the one about Bush leaving the stink of sulfur behind him (because that’s what devils smell like). One wonders how much global warming is a direct result of the overheated speeches that UN members seem to specialize in.

The UN adversely affects our national security. Our servicemen are participating in peacekeeping missions under foreign control, in areas where we have no vital security interests. Where our concerns are involved, as in Iraq, turning to the UN for advice and consent causes delays, uncertainty and danger for our armed forces.

The UN is a totally corrupt, mismanaged bureaucracy. The United States is its largest contributor. This fact does nothing to silence the critics who daily lambaste the U.S. for not donating more money. The Oil for Food program was a classic example of how career kleptocrats from random dictatorships misuse and steal the funds entrusted to them. The example was set at the top by Kofi Annan and the rest of his grasping family. Why are middle-class American taxpayers footing the bill for all this?

The UN gives legitimacy to illegitimate regimes while doing nothing to make bad countries better. Instead, the UN continues to roll out the red carpet for tinpot dictators like Chavez, giving them a forum to reach a global audience under its auspices. The UN tolerates evil, expects corruption, and rewards incompetence.

Other UN progeny threaten American interests in almost every sphere. The right of Americans to own guns is under assault from the International Arms Trade Treaty. Our country's economic interests are endangered by the International Trade Commission. The International Criminal Court threatens to throw our soldiers in the dock when they work too hard at keeping the peace.

The UN causes trouble just by the fact that it exists. It has become the "go-to guy" for any seemingly intractable problem. Nobody seems to notice its pathetic track record. And that track record doesn’t silence the drumbeat for a GDP tax on U.S. taxpayers to make the UN an even bigger nuisance. We should take Hugo Chavez’s advice and move the UN to Venezuela. Environmentalists should love the improved air quality over North America.
