Several other books have described the scandalous behavior of Bill and Hillary Clinton, but David Limbaugh's new book Absolute Power provides us with a reliable and readable summary of how the Department of Justice facilitated and covered up the Clinton scandals. That is more dangerous to our nation than White House misbehavior because the Justice Department should be the principal custodian of our Rule of Law.
Limbaugh describes the lengths to which the White House went, including compromising our national security interests, to get the money it needed to retain power and assure reelection in 1996. These tactics included selling seats on Air Force One and U.S. trade missions, sleepovers in the Lincoln bedroom, and spots in the White House pool and tennis courts. And why didn't the Republican Congress expose the national security dangers of the Clinton-China campaign-money connection? Limbaugh explains how the Senate investigating committee was undermined by its ranking minority member, Senator John Glenn. The culpability of the Justice Department in the infamous Waco raid is deftly summarized in Absolute Power. David Limbaugh shows how the Danforth investigation was so narrowly circumscribed that it could not expose all the facts and therefore could not absolve the government of wrongdoing. Limbaugh explains what really happened to Linda Tripp, the most important whistle-blower in all the Clinton scandals, and how the Clinton Administration unleashed its spin dogs to smear her and to prosecute her for telling the truth. Limbaugh describes how the Clinton Administration framed permanent, loyal White House employees in the travel office in order to give those jobs to Clinton cronies. He details how the White House used pardon requests for Puerto Rican terrorists as a campaign tool for the candidacies of Hillary Clinton and Al Gore. Then there was poor little ElÃan Gonzalez. Limbaugh explains how the Justice Department trampled on the Fourth Amendment rights of his Miami relatives and brought that episode to a violent close in accord with Clinton's demands. Absolute Power is an important book because it goes right to the core of what was so dangerous about the Clinton Administration. It copiously documents a corruption of our government that must not be forgotten or swept under the rug just because Clinton is no longer in power. All those who value liberty, the rule of law, and impartial justice should read it from cover to cover. (Regnery Publishing, 2001; 331 pp., $27.95) |

Under President Clinton and Attorney General Janet Reno, the Justice Department changed from an agency upholding objective law into a political arm of the Clinton Administration. Attorney General Janet Reno ensured that there would be no exposure or punishment when the Clinton Administration used raw political power to smear and destroy its critics, to raise illegal campaign money from foreign sources, and to sell government perks for political contributions.
